During the last two decades the South Med-region has been trapped in cycles of interest and disinterest, the transition from euphoria and hope to disappointment and frustration, with the feeling of never being able to take off and move forward. After the migration crisis, limiting the EU strategy vis-à-vis the region to the short-term management of a safe and negative agenda would disregard the region's strengths and risk to hinder the potential for long term development and stability. The Euro-Mediterranean area needs to strengthen the collective political commitment in favour of concrete actions leveraging on the vitality of its societies and especially its youth. Fathallah Sijilmassi, former Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, draws on his past experience to give us an enlightening book, rich of reflections and proposals on how to think of the regions and design a EU strategy. He argues that the Mediterranean today needs neither a romantic vision of the glorious past of the Mare Nostrum, nor a defeatist and anxiety-provoking discourse on the state of the region, nor still permanent theories on the eternal necessity of re-foundation of the partnership. To avoid another missed opportunity, the region needs concrete actions. This requires to consider a strategy that embeds the political, economic, cultural and human dimension. Michael Koehler, Deputy Director General, European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations and Prof. Rym Ayadi, Director of Director Euro-Mediterranean Network for Economic Studies and President of the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association, will share their views on the future of the region and the Euro-Med relation.
